What the price actually reflects
Fabric quality — thread count, cotton origin (e.g. Egyptian or Sea Island cotton), and weave — along with construction details like single-needle stitching and mother-of-pearl buttons are the genuine cost drivers behind a premium shirt, not just the label. Two shirts from the same brand can be priced differently for real reasons if one uses a heavier or finer fabric.
Fit varies more than the size label suggests
"Slim," "tailored," and "classic" fit labels aren't standardised across brands — a slim fit from one label can be roomier than the classic fit from another. Check the actual chest/collar measurements listed rather than relying on the fit name alone, especially when comparing a cheaper listing against a familiar brand.
End-of-line clearance is real
Shirts get discontinued in specific colours and patterns each season, and retailers clear that stock at genuine discounts — it's the same shirt, not a lesser batch. If you're not fixed on a very specific pattern, checking clearance/outlet listings alongside full-price ones often finds the same quality for meaningfully less.
The practical fix
Comparing the same brand and fabric weight across several retailers at once — rather than trusting one store's price as the baseline — is the only reliable way to know you're not overpaying for a shirt you could find identically elsewhere for less.
